Helping YOUTH to PURSUE THEIR ACADEMIC and VOCATIONAL GOALS!
Family members and friends of Sallie Davis Brewer formed the Sallie Davis Brewer Foundation in the year 2000. Sallie was born in West Point Mississippi. At the age of twenty-seven, Sallie moved with her husband Elijah Brewer, Jr. and their children to the Westside of Chicago, Illinois. Sallie worked with her husband to establish a family business and acquire real estate properties on the Westside. She was well known in the community and this became her second home. Many friendships were formed and nourished over the years. In 1967 Sallie and Elijah made another move, this time to the Southside of Chicago, again they opened a family business and acquired real estate properties.
Sallie formed many friendships in the community around 79th Street and Sangamon. God gifted Sallie with the spirit of helping. She had the heart of the “Good Samaritan” Jesus taught, “but a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine,” Luke 10:33-34. Sallie had an encouraging word for the disempowered.
Sallie continued to run the family business after her husband died in 1987. She was successful and provided a comfortable living for her family. Sallie worked with several community groups to improve area in which they lived. Her civic concern for the community was evidence in her actively involvement with the following groups:
1) The Auburn Park Concerned Citizen Organization
2) The 80th Sangamon Block Club
3) The 79th Street Redevelopment Organization
While Sallie’s involvement with these were great and her accomplishments many, they did not define her. At an early age in West Point Mississippi, Sallie gave her life to Christ. During the last eleven years of her life, under the authority of Reverend Dr. Edwin Simmons and the support of members of the New Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, her faith in God increased. And her relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ grew stronger. Her spirit of trusting God and serving others is the seed that the Foundation grew out of and is directed by.
