Helping YOUTH to PURSUE THEIR ACADEMIC and VOCATIONAL GOALS!

History

In the Fall of 2000, family members and friends of Sallie Davis Brewer formed the Sallie Davis Brewer Foundation to honor Sallie. To honor her commitment to honest work, her compassion for helping those in needed, and her belief in the scripture when it says, “…be doers of the word, and not hearers only…..”, James 1:22.  Sallie was born in West Point Mississippi. At the age of twenty-seven, she moved to Chicago, Illinois with her husband, Elijah Brewer, Jr. and their four children, her youngest child was born in Chicago. Sallie and her family made their home on the Westside of Chicago. Sallie and her husband started a family business and acquired several pieces of real estate properties on the Westside of Chicago. While living on the Westside, many friendships were  formed and nourished, she was well known in the community.  In 1967 Sallie and Elijah moved their family to the Southside of Chicago, the Auburn/Gresham Park community, again Sallie forming strong relationships. During the 30 years that she lived in the Auburn Park Community, she actively served on several community boards that worked to bring social and economic stability to the area. Sallie’s concern for her community and its residents was demonstrated by her actively involvement with organizations such as The Auburn Park Concerned Citizen Organization, The 80th Sangamon Block Club, and The 79th Street Redevelopment Organization. She worked with these groups to help improve the social and economic conditions of the Auburn Park community.   In the winter of 1987, Elijah Brewer, Jr. died after a short illness. Sallie continued her involvement
in the community and operation of the family business. She was successful, and provided a comfortable living for her family. After becoming ill in the Spring of 1999, Sallie died in October 1999 after several months of medical examinations and treatments.  Family and friends came together to honor Sallie because we knew that her success in business
and her many contributions to her community, as well as her faith in God made an impact in so many peoples’ lives. She is remembered by her devotion to family, community and servitude.
During the last eleven years of her life, under the authority of Reverend Dr. Edwin Simmons and the support of members of the New Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, her faith in God increased, as well as her relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her spirit of trusting God and serving others is the seed that the Foundation grew out of and now, directs its activities.
